Ficosterra launches a new phase of REFFECT AFRICA project to assess the agricultural potential of biochar
July 27, 2026Following several months of work, Ficosterra is launching a new business line for manufacturers, formulators, distributors and other companies operating in the agricultural sector. This new offering gives them access to marine-derived ingredients, proprietary technologies, and product development and manufacturing capabilities to create sustainable solutions tailored to the needs of different markets.
Agriculture is moving towards increasingly efficient, sustainable and specialised solutions. At the same time, the fertiliser and biostimulant industry is evolving and seeking new ingredients, technologies and formulation tools that can provide differentiation and respond to increasingly specific agronomic challenges.
Against this backdrop, Ficosterra has spent the past several months developing a new business line that expands the ways in which the company makes its expertise in marine biotechnology available to the sector.
This has led to the launch of Ficosterra’s Industrial Solutions, a new offering specifically designed for manufacturers, formulators, distributors and companies developing solutions for agriculture.

From developing products to sharing
our technological capabilities
Since its foundation, Ficosterra has explored the potential of seaweed and beneficial microorganisms to develop solutions aimed at improving the efficiency and sustainability of agricultural production.
This work has resulted in several proprietary technologies—one of which has received the European Union’s Seal of Excellence—as well as a range of innovative products for agriculture.
However, this journey has also generated something particularly valuable: scientific knowledge, formulation expertise and the ability to develop marine- and microbial-derived ingredients with different agronomic functionalities.
Ficosterra’s new Industrial Solutions business line is built precisely on these capabilities. Its purpose is to make the company’s knowledge, technologies and resources available to other businesses, enabling them to incorporate these ingredients into their own formulations or develop new solutions tailored to the needs of their customers and target markets.
Marine-derived ingredients backed
by proprietary technologies
The new business line brings together a selection of marine-derived extracts, concentrates, functional ingredients and complexes developed using Ficosterra’s proprietary technologies.
This portfolio provides manufacturers and formulators with different options according to the agronomic functions they wish to incorporate into their products, including:
Crop vigour and vegetative development.
Root system development.
Water and nutrient use efficiency.
Physiological balance throughout the crop cycle.
Adaptation to adverse environmental conditions.
Interaction with the soil microbiome.
Yield stability and crop quality.
The agricultural potential of seaweed is linked to the diversity of the compounds it contains and their role in different physiological processes. However, the value of a seaweed extract does not depend solely on the species used. The origin and condition of the biomass, the extraction process, the resulting molecular profile and the final formulation all play a decisive role in determining its agronomic functionality.
This perspective is explored in greater detail in our article on the use of seaweed as a fertilizer and its contribution to more sustainable agriculture.
Understanding plant physiology is also essential when designing solutions for the different stages of crop development. The mechanisms that regulate plant development are complex and interconnected, as explained in our articles on phytohormones, their types, functions and agricultural applications and the role of auxins in plant development.
For this reason, Ficosterra does not approach its ingredients as standard solutions suitable for every application. Instead, it works with manufacturers and formulators to identify the technology and ingredient that best match the intended function, formulation, crop type and target market.
Scientific knowledge and
agronomic validation
These ingredients are supported by the knowledge generated by Ficosterra’s R&D and Innovation Department and by a research track record developed both internally and through scientific collaborations with universities and research centres.
This expertise is reinforced by Ficosterra’s participation in national and international projects related to marine biotechnology, agricultural innovation, sustainability and the development of new seaweed-based value chains.
These initiatives include NUTRIALGAE, selected by the United Nations Development Programme’s Ocean Innovation Challenge, and the European I3-4-SEAWEED project, which focuses on driving the development of new seaweed-based value chains.
This knowledge is complemented by the validation of different solutions under real crop and agronomic conditions. The results achieved throughout this journey can be explored in our case studies.
Beyond ingredients:
custom solutions
Industry needs cannot always be met with a standard ingredient.
For this reason, Ficosterra’s Industrial Solutions business line also includes Custom Solutions for companies seeking to develop products or formulations tailored to specific agronomic, technical, regulatory or commercial requirements.
Ficosterra provides its customers with expertise in marine biotechnology, raw material selection, extraction processes, formulation and agronomic development. This enables the company to support them throughout the different stages involved in creating a new solution:
01
Custom formulation
and reformulation
Development and optimisation of formulations tailored to each customer’s technical requirements, intended application and market positioning.
02
Contract
manufacturing
Manufacturing of finished agricultural solutions under the customer’s own brand, supported by scalable processes, quality control and full ingredient traceability.
03
Technical and
regulatory support
Technical and documentation support throughout the product development process, from ingredient selection and prototyping to validation, scale-up and the regulatory procedures applicable in the target market.

This model allows Ficosterra to build a different kind of relationship with its B2B customers: going beyond the supply of an ingredient to work alongside them, from identifying a specific need to developing and manufacturing a solution tailored to it.
New responses for
a changing agricultural sector
Developing new agricultural products requires an understanding of the relationship between crop nutrition, plant physiology, resource use efficiency and sustainability.
In this context, it is important to understand the differences between the various approaches to plant nutrition and the possibilities they offer. Our article comparing organic and inorganic fertilisers examines the characteristics of both approaches, while our guide to agricultural biostimulants, their types and applications explores the role these products can play in current crop management strategies.

Ficosterra’s Industrial Solutions business line translates this knowledge into specific developments by combining marine-derived ingredients, proprietary technologies, agronomic expertise and industrial capabilities.
A new business line built
on years of R&D and innovation
This new business line is based on the same principle that has guided Ficosterra since its foundation: transforming marine biotechnology into practical solutions for agriculture.
Our research projects, the continuous development of new technologies and the validation of solutions across different crops and agronomic conditions have created a strong knowledge base that we are now also making available to the industry.
Ficosterra will continue to develop its own agricultural products while opening its technologies, ingredients, and product development and manufacturing capabilities to other companies in the sector.
Ficosterra’s website evolves
to reflect this new stage
The evolution of our market offering is also reflected in the new structure of Ficosterra’s website, designed to present more clearly the different ways in which we make our technology available to the sector.
Users can now easily distinguish between Products, which features the solutions developed by Ficosterra for use in agriculture, and Industrial Solutions, the new area created specifically for manufacturers, formulators and distributors.
The website also provides information about the technologies behind both business lines, our research projects, the results achieved under field conditions and the different opportunities for working with Ficosterra.
More than simply a change to our website, this new structure reflects a new stage in Ficosterra’s evolution: the company will continue to develop its own solutions for agriculture while also making its technology, ingredients and development capabilities available to other companies in the sector.
