Terramare by Ficosterra positions itself among the first FPC-6 biostimulants in Europe that integrate seaweed extracts and microorganisms in a single formulation.
At Ficosterra, we work to bring farmers effective, safe, and EU-compliant biotechnological solutions.
Today, we are pleased to announce that Terramare has obtained the European Union Biostimulant Registration as FPC-6(A) (microbial plant biostimulant), in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2019/1009.
This achievement opens the door for its commercialization with the CE mark across all 27 EU member states and officially certifies its efficacy and safety.
It is a recognition of Ficosterra’s scientific rigor and commitment to responsible innovation.
The Challenge of Achieving CE Registration for a Biostimulant
Obtaining the CE mark for a biostimulant is not a mere administrative procedure but a complex, lengthy, and costly process combining bureaucratic, technical, and scientific aspects.
Regulation (EU) 2019/1009, which establishes harmonized requirements for EU fertilizer products, requires each biostimulant to demonstrate:
Proven agronomic efficacy, through field trials conducted under CEN/TS 17700 standards and EPPO guidelines.
Total safety and traceability, certified by a notified body. In the case of Terramare, this process was validated by NB 2982 – CAAE.
Comprehensive technical documentation, including product characterization, safety data sheets, microbiological studies, compatibility reports, and scientific justification of efficacy claims.
Each of these stages involves months of research, testing by independent CROs, and significant investment — but guarantees farmers the highest technical and legal credibility of the results.
The Agronomic Value of Seaweed and Its Microbial Synergy
This exclusive formulation achieves a dual biological interaction:
Seaweeds act as natural prebiotics, rich in polyphenols, alginates, mannitol, and alginic acid—compounds that improve water retention, soil microbial activity, and plant tolerance to abiotic stress (drought, salinity, or cold).
Microorganisms provide biofertilizing activity, fixing atmospheric nitrogen, solubilizing phosphorus, mobilize potassium and naturally promotes plant growth.
The result is a product that:
Optimizes nutrient (NUE) and water use efficiency (WUE).
Develops a more vigorous root system, improving nutrient uptake.
Increases the size, uniformity, and quality of fruits.
Reduces the effects of water and saline stress, maintaining yield even under limiting conditions.
“The true value of Terramare lies in the agronomic power contributed by seaweeds, in synergy with specific microbial strains. These are natural resources with extraordinary biostimulant potential.” — Alejandro Martínez, CTO of Ficosterra
This combination of marine biotechnology and agricultural microbiology forms the core of MareTech technology, an innovative system developed by Ficosterra to enhance the productivity and sustainability of European agricultural soils.
Five Years of Research with IQUIMAB (University of León)
The project, led by Professor Fernando González de Andrés, was carried out over more than five years of joint work between the university and Ficosterra’s R&D+i team. During this time, researchers González de Andrés, Ismael Mazuecos, and Francisco Anta led the laboratory trials, strain characterization, experimental design, and agronomic validation of the formulation.
This scientific effort is part of the collaboration agreement signed in 2022 between Ficosterra and the University of León, supported by the university’s Rector. The goal: to advance applied research in agricultural biotechnology and foster the transfer of academic knowledge to the production sector.
The work of the IQUIMAB team has been essential for understanding the interactions between seaweed extracts and microorganisms, establishing the foundations of their behavior in soil, and rigorously documenting the product’s efficacy and stability.
The result is a scientifically robust biostimulant, backed by experimental evidence from recognized universities and testing centers.
Success Story in Corn: Higher Yield with Fewer Resources
One of the most representative trials conducted with the biostimulant Terramare was carried out by the CRO NEVAL Grupo Farmalent in Xilxes (Castellón) during the 2024 season, under water and nutrient stress conditions.
The trial, conducted under the GEP (Good Experimental Practice) protocol and following CEN/TS 17700 and EPPO PP1/152 standards, included three experimental treatments:
01
Control 100%
standard management with full irrigation and fertilization.
02
Control 70%
management with a 30% reduction in water and fertilizer.
03
Terramare 70%
30% input reduction + application of Terramare (1 L/ha, two applications).
Results were clear and successful:
+8.7% grain yield increase vs. the stressed control (p ≤ 0.05).
+21.9% more ears per 20 m² plot compared to the 70% control.
No phytotoxic effects or alterations in non-target parameters.
Technical conclusion: Terramare mitigates abiotic stress effects, maintains productivity with fewer inputs, and improves water and nutrient resource efficiency.
These results confirm that the application of Terramare can be a key tool for farmers seeking sustainability and profitability, especially in areas with water or fertilizer restrictions.
