i3-4-SEAWEED

The European project i3-4-SEAWEED promotes interregional collaboration to develop and prepare business initiatives of biotechnological origin, with the focus on the macroalgae sector.

I3-4 Seaweed consists of sixteen partners from the EU — Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and Ireland — who join forces and technologies to create a transformative transnational value chain based on sustainable algae cultivation techniques and biotechnological applications.

Innovative SMEs, universities, technology centers, and industrial clusters will enhance the EU algae industries, a source of sustainable innovation capable of transforming regional environments, especially in coastal and maritime areas.

Macroalgae demonstrate their versatility to revolutionize key sectors in the food industry, cosmetics, and agriculture, with the production of biostimulants and biofertilizers that help reduce conventional fertilization and abiotic stress, among other benefits.

To achieve the project’s objectives, i3-4-SEAWEED will offer:

Demonstrations and technical Support

Facilitation of business contacts

Development of personalized market access strategies for each investment case

Additionally, I3-4 Seaweed includes the development of a financing program to support 30 innovative SMEs and startups, helping them overcome technical and market barriers while strengthening the European algae ecosystem.

The goal is the creation of a “Transnational Algae Food Innovation Center,” a permanent hub of innovation and financial advice that will benefit companies like Ficosterra and regions involved in the algae value chain.

Ficosterra: Spanish innovation in
the marine algae sector

As part of this consortium, Ficosterra participates as an “Investment Case” company, leading scale-up initiatives with marine algae-based biofertilizer and biostimulant solutions that contribute to the sustainability of agricultural crops.

In this context, Ficosterra will aim to scale, pilot, and demonstrate the validity of its current technologies (TRL6).

Ficosterra’s participation in i3-4-SEAWEED not only highlights Spanish leadership in marine biotechnology but also helps boost interregional competitiveness, close innovation gaps, and leverage the potential of marine algae in Europe to build a more sustainable future.
