BlueInvest Day 2020 <\/strong><\/a>meets next on February 4 in Brussels 206 entrepreneur\u2019s forum organized by the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs of the European Commission which will be attended by investors, companies, and stakeholders of the Blue Economy<\/em>.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Blueinvest Day\nis a day organized by the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs of the\nEuropean Union to publicize the best business initiatives, innovation and\nstart-up related to the development of the so-called Econom\u00eda Azul<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ficosterra is\nthe only Spanish start-up selected to present its marine biotechnology project\napplied to agriculture, an innovative, sustainable and environmentally friendly\nproject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This will not be\nthe first time we present our business project outside our borders. Our\nparticipation in October 2019 in the Blue\nBioValue<\/a> business\nacceleration program, offered us to give visibility to our project\ninternationally. As we informed you in our NEWS of 10\/22\/19, <\/a>Blue\nBioValue<\/a> is an\ninternational business acceleration program, organized by the Blue Ocean Foundation<\/a> and the Gulbenkian\nGulbenki Foundation<\/a> in\ncollaboration with Startup Factory, the Bluebio, and Faber Ventures<\/a> , whose mission is to foster a more blue\neconomy by helping to develop projects and ideas that represent a business\nopportunity within the marine biological resources chain, including\nbiotechnology, to promote the supply of products or services with a positive\nimpact in the sustainability of the ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2019 edition\nfocused on finding solutions to the 6 main challenges<\/strong> currently present:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Feed\na growing population by ensuring sustainable supply systems<\/li>
  2. Improve\nhealth and well-being<\/li>
  3. Climate change<\/li>
  4. Reduction of CO2 emissions<\/li>
  5. Preserve\nnatural ecosystems, biodiversity and resource shortages<\/li>
  6. Promote\ncircular bioeconomics and reduce plastic production and pollution.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    In this edition Ficosterra won a prize with the Portuguese Bisolvit and the Scottish uFraction8, two start-ups also related to the marine world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Luis Lombana, CEO of Ficosterra, will present the project in a forum attended by more than 200 participants. They will be the same ones who will also be eligible for the BlueInvest Awards<\/a> , awards that distinguish the 20 best European initiatives in the form of innovative products, technologies, and solutions that can shape the future of the Blue Economy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A select panel of investors will also be present in this selective process, endorsed by the European Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What is the Blue Economy?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Seas and oceans constitute the engine of the\nBlue Economy<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    According to the\nEuropean Union, the Blue\nEconomy<\/strong><\/a> is\nall those activities that recognize the value of the seas and oceans as engines\nof the economy for their great potential for innovation and growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Several\ninterdependent sectors make up this increasingly powerful economy: fisheries,\naquaculture and marine biotechnology, tourism, navigation, the marine wind\nindustry, and maritime transport, among others. All of them have common\ncompetencies and shared infrastructure (ports, logistics networks, and\nelectricity distribution) and, at the same time, they all sustainably use\nmarine resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The United\nKingdom, Spain, Italy, France, and Greece have the largest \u201cblue economies\u201d in\nthe European Union. According to data from this institution, the blue economy\n\u201chas grown in several EU member states faster than the national economy in the\nlast decade\u201d and continues to grow \u201csteadily.\u201d With a turnover of 566,000\nmillion euros in 2016, the sector generates 174 million euros of added value\nand creates jobs for almost 3.5 million people, 1.6% of total EU employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In the case of\nSpain, the Blue Economy <\/strong><\/a>employed more than 691,000 people in 2016 and\ngenerated, according to the same report, approximately 23 million euros of\nadded value. Topping the list is the tourism sector, with 77% of total\nemployment, followed by the marine resources sector, with 17%. Emerging sectors\nsuch as biotechnology and the employment of the offshore wind industry are also\nbooming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Given these\ndata, we do not doubt affirming that Ficosterra’s<\/strong> business project is\nlocated in a sector of great future and with a long history<\/strong>. The\nproduction of inputs from seaweed is a 100% ecological and sustainable alternative\nfor our crops. Today they are presented as a necessity demanded by European\npolicies and also our most innovative farmers.
