Ficosterra has taken a significant step in agri-biotechnological research<\/strong>. Its latest study, developed in collaboration with the Chemical, Environmental, and Bioprocess Engineering Group (IQUIMAB)<\/a> at the Institute for Research and Innovation in Engineering (I4) of the University of Le\u00f3n, has been published in the prestigious scientific journal Frontiers in Plant Science<\/em><\/a>. This represents international recognition of Ficosterra\u2019s scientific rigor and its strong commitment to biostimulants, foliar fertilizers, biofertilizers, and sustainable agricultural solutions for the future.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

What Problem Does<\/strong>
the Study Address?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.<\/em>) is one of the most important crops globally, both in terms of production and consumption. However, it is particularly vulnerable to a devastating fungus: Botrytis cinerea<\/em><\/a>, the cause of the disease known as gray mold<\/em>. This pathogen affects over 200 plant species and causes economic losses exceeding $10 billion annually.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Until now, the main tool to combat it has been chemical fungicides. But excessive use not only harms the environment, it can also lead to pathogen resistance. Hence, the importance of finding natural, effective, and sustainable alternatives.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n

\n

The Solution:
Beneficial Bacteria as Natural Defense<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\n
\n

The research published in Frontiers in Plant Science<\/em> presents a promising, sustainable, and environmentally friendly alternative: the use of beneficial bacteria (PGPR) that not only promote plant growth but also enhance their internal defenses\u2014acting like an \u201cecological vaccine\u201d through a mechanism known as Induced Systemic Resistance (ISR) .\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specifically, two bacterial strains were analyzed, selected and registered by Ficosterra:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Peribacillus frigoritolerans<\/em> (CD_FICOS_02)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Pseudomonas canadensis<\/em> (CD_FICOS_03<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    These strains were applied to the soil of tomato plants, and their ability to protect against B. cinerea<\/em> was evaluated through the activation of what is known as Induced Systemic Resistance (ISR)<\/strong>, a natural plant defense mechanism.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n

    The highly encouraging results led Frontiers in Plant Science<\/em> to highlight the study:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Two strains, P. frigoritolerans<\/em> and P. canadensis<\/em>, significantly reduced the damage caused by the fungus<\/strong> and also improved biomass production<\/strong> in infected plants.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    The study showed that these bacteria activate different hormonal defense pathways within the plant:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    P. frigoritolerans<\/em> <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    Stimulated the salicylic acid (SA) pathway, crucial for fighting infections.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    P. canadensis<\/em> <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    Activated the jasmonic acid and ethylene (JA\/ET) signaling pathways, also associated with immune responses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    Additionally, these bacteria reduced oxidative stress in the plants, as indicated by decreased accumulation of hydrogen peroxide (H\u2082O\u2082) and malondialdehyde (MDA)\u2014confirming their protective effect.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n
