Every May 20th, we celebrate World Bee Day to highlight the essential role of these pollinators in agriculture, biodiversity, and planet sustainability. Established in 2018 by the UN and led by the Government of Slovenia, this day pays tribute to Anton Janša, a pioneer of modern beekeeping. This year, under the theme “Commitment to Bees, Hand in Hand with Youth”, the campaign emphasizes the role of new generations in pollinator conservation.

The Role of bees
in the ecosystem

Bees are indispensable for pollination, a process that ensures plant reproduction, crop diversity, and global food security.

Approximately 75% of food crops and 90% of flowering plants depend on pollination, making bees a pillar in agriculture and biodiversity.

Economy

Globally, the economic value of insect pollination, primarily by bees, has been estimated at approximately 153 billion euros per year, representing around 10% of the total value of global agricultural production.
